July's Birthstone: Ruby

The height of summer brings precious ruby to the fore; it is among the most highly prized of gemstones. Red is the colour of the ruby -  Yves Saint Laurent called red the ‘colour of love, battle, death, and warmth’. It is a stone of nobility, known to protect wearers from evils in the world.

Tiffany published poems for each birthstone month "of unknown author" in a pamphlet in 1870, this is July's.

The gleaming Ruby should adorn,
All those who in July are born,
For thus they'll be exempt and free,
From lover's doubts and anxiety.

You may not find this precious stone in Vintage Modes, but you will most certainly find an abundance of vibrant faux ruby costume jewellery! Below is a small example of the stunning pieces on offer at the moment..

A focus on... the 1940s

Despite the hardships of WWII, fashion in the 1940s was creative and innovative. 'Make do and Mend' was a pamphlet full of useful tips issued by the British Ministry of Information in the midst of WWII, it encouraged housewives to be both frugal and stylish in times of harsh rationing.

Make do and Mend pamphlet

The rationing of the 1940s enforced an era of required minimalism. The shortage of fabric created the popularity of the two piece suit known as a Victory or Utility suit, which took on a sleek, military look. Women could mix and match skirts, blouses and jackets for a new outfit everyday. Even after the war the suits remained popular due to its comfort and practicality.

During the war years, hats still remained very fanciful and continued to play an important role in women's fashion. It may have been even more important than usual, as many of the materials that went into the making of hats were not rationed, although it was commonplace to add a corsage made of fresh flowers or feathers to snazz it up. Many women also owned corsages made of artificial flowers or gathered netting to accessorise a dress.

Precious gemstones and diamonds became difficult to source, the 1940s saw a revival of gold jewellery and experimentation with a wider range of gemstones such as citrine. During this period costume jewellery still mimicked fine jewellery.

If the 1940s is your favourite decade for fashion, make sure you plan a trip to Vintage Modes, here's a selection of what you might find:

A focus on.. the 1920s

Here at Vintage Modes we will be doing a round up of fashion across the eras over the coming weeks, starting with the 1920s.

The 1920s is largely associated with flapper style dresses and the Art Deco period. In terms of jewellery, the 1920s moved away from the fussiness of the Art Nouveau period and from the societal pressures to wear your wealth. Precious stones were replaced with semi precious stones and plastics.

One popular style was the long beaded necklace; they had round faceted stones in the popular Art Deco colour pallet of black, red, white and green. Beads made of bakelite or lucite made jewellery affordable to everyone. One popular style of the long beaded necklace was the Sautoir. It usually had a tassel hanging at the bottom or a large single gemstone pendant and could be worn down the front or back of a dress.

In addition to necklaces, with women cutting their hair short, drop earrings became a popular style of earring, drawing attention to the neck area.

Here is a selection of our favourite 1920s and Art Deco pieces from Vintage Modes at Grays:
